“Your Trademark Here” Gets to the Heart of Leadership

For some attendees at the INTA Leadership Meeting, a week of talking trade marks, meeting in committees and beach-based networking is not enough. What they’re really here for is golf.
Managing IP has reported elsewhere on the winners of INTA’s annual volunteer awards. But for some of those in Miami Beach this week the real prizes are for achievements on the fairways and greens.

It’s a pleasure to report therefore that former Managing IP sales executive Phil Cox won both the men’s long drive and lowest gross trophies at the annual “Your Trademark Here” invitational golf tournament on November 8.

Cox, who has a handicap of 5, worked for Managing IP in London and New York from 2001 to 2006. He now heads Global Law Marketing.

The tournament was hosted by Ken Taylor of Marksmen, David Friedland of Friedland Vining and Frank Hiscox of Lewis and Roca, and featured about 40 players. It was held on the Red course at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa.

Other winners were Vanessa Backman of Andra Brand, who won the women’s low gross and closest to the pin awards, and the Hiscox women – mother Jeanette and daughter Kim – who won the women’s low net and long drive trophies.

John Blattner of Dickinson Wright won men’s low net and Jon Kent of INTA the men’s closest to the pin.

With mostly fine weather and some great courses available in south Florida, there was more golf to be had later in the week.

One New York attorney told Managing IP at the beginning of the meeting that he planned to play six rounds of golf in five days: “I always go the extra mile. It’s why my clients pay me $785 an hour.”
